Explore · Learn · Protect
At Mako Pako, we believe that protecting the ocean begins with understanding it.
Every expedition, every sighting, and every record we collect offshore is transformed into knowledge—for students, scientists, and anyone who wants to better understand the Cantabrian Sea and the sharks that inhabit it.
In this section, you will find our educational work, our scientific achievements through citizen science projects, and resources created from years of documenting the Basque pelagic environment.
Outreach
Bringing the ocean to where the ocean cannot reach
The Cantabrian Sea is a fascinating yet largely unknown ecosystem.
At Mako Pako, we share our knowledge and discoveries about sharks with schools, associations, and educational centers.
We do not talk about oceans “in general.” We talk about the sharks of the Cantabrian Sea, using our own images, data recorded by us, and real, first-hand experiences.

Citizen Science
Studying the ocean together
Conservation does not happen only in laboratories.
It also happens on every trip offshore, with every shark we document, and through every photograph contributed by those who join us on board.
Today, our database is one of the most complete continuous records of blue sharks in this area of the Cantabrian Sea.
Our Achievements to Date
- Over 1,000 blue sharks documented
- 9 shark species recorded
- More than 200 expedition days
- Hundreds of participants contributing data
- Direct contribution to the ISRA of Bermeo
- Data included in the Basque Coast AoI
How Our Guests Participate
During each activity, participants help to:
- Count individuals
- Compare sizes
- Document scars and markings
- Contribute photographs and videos
- Record behavior and presence
All this information is uploaded to the Observadores del Mar platform, where anyone can create a profile and take part in real scientific projects.
Our Impact
Our scientific impact in the Cantabrian Sea
Mako Pako’s offshore work does more than create experiences—it generates data that has been used in conservation projects, scientific publications, and international designations.
This is the result of years of exploration, documentation, and collaboration with researchers.
